January 5, 2011: Reorganization Meeting

Tonight we had our reorganization meeting. Committeewomen Vigdis Austad and Susan Campbell were sworn into office and I was sworn in as Mayor for 2011. I am grateful for this opportunity and I thank the Committee for selecting me to be mayor. I am really looking forward to this!

Here is the speech I gave at the conclusion of our meeting:

Honorable Mayor: I have every confidence in you as you embark in this Public Office. I believe our citizens are to be well-served this year; had I thought otherwise, I would not have voted for you.
You, of course, knew that not a day would pass before receiving early salvos from critics. I know a few of them and most follow an eye-closed credo: "Even if you persuade me, you won't persuade me".
I urge you, Mayor, not to say to them: “Go hang yourselves / You will never want rope enough” (F. Rabelais, 1494-1553). Instead, take to heart this from President Abraham Lincoln written as to his critics: “If I were to try to read, much less answer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for any other business. I do the very best I know how - the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out all right, what's said against me won't amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference."

Sincerely & Respectfully,
Rob McGeary
